Remembering Abraham

So many people reaching the end of their earthly journey find themselves in a sterile environment surrounded by strangers, machines, and noise—or even on the street. And those who are fortunate enough to receive hospice care at home often feel like a burden to their families.

Abraham—whose birthday we honor today on April 27—was deeply stirred by this every day as he walked Albuquerque’s downtown streets on his way to Mass. He spent the end of his earthly life working for a world in which “no one dies alone.”

Starting in Albuquerque, we want to change this experience by starting a home for the dying—together. A home where the dying are honored, loved ones are comforted, staff and volunteers become family, and healthcare providers are inspired and rejuvenated. Supported by volunteers, staff, and partners (especially hospice agencies), the dying and their families will no longer be shunned nor dehumanized as an opportunity for profit. In our home, they will be welcomed as essential community members.

Today, we mourn the loss of Abraham. We pray for his blessed repose. We ask for his prayers. Gathering strength again to continue the mission that he started:

“A home for every person at the hour of death.”
